Advanced Radical (open) procedures

Open and complex procedures: When is radical surgery needed?

When cancer is advanced, or a tumour is large or close to other organs, open surgery (through a single larger incision) is often the safest and most effective approach. It gives the surgeon the fullest possible access to remove all disease — and for many gynaecological cancers, the completeness of that surgery is one of the most important factors in a patient’s outcome.

Mr Sideris is a subspecialty-trained gynaecological oncology surgeon with extensive experience in major open and complex procedures, including:

  • Cytoreductive (“debulking”) surgery for advanced ovarian cancer
  • Radical hysterectomy and pelvic surgery for cervical and womb cancer
  • Surgery involving the bowel, peritoneum or upper abdomen where the disease has spread
  • Complex and exenterative procedures for advanced or recurrent disease
  • Removal of large or complex pelvic masses where keyhole surgery is not appropriate

His research includes work on predicting and reducing the risks of major ovarian cancer surgery, reflecting a focus on achieving the most complete cancer clearance while keeping patients as safe as possible
