Precision Prevention - Familial Cancers
Familial cancers
Some women inherit a genetic change that significantly raises their lifetime risk of ovarian, breast or womb cancer — the best known being BRCA1, BRCA2 and the Lynch syndrome genes. Understanding your risk early opens the door to a personalised prevention plan that can reduce it dramatically.
Prevention is a central focus of Mr Sideris’s academic work. He co-authored a major review on the screening and prevention of ovarian cancer in the Medical Journal of Australia, alongside Professors Usha Menon and Ranjit Manchanda, and his research on cancer prevention and genetic testing has been published in leading journals including JAMA Oncology, JAMA Network Open and the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. This means the advice you receive is grounded in the most current evidence.
He can help you with:
- Assessment of your personal and family history of cancer
- Coordination of genetic testing and clear interpretation of the results
- Counselling on what an increased risk means for you and your relatives
- Risk-reducing surgery (such as removal of the tubes and ovaries) at the right time for you
- Tailored surveillance and prevention strategies based on your specific gene and stage of life
Our approach
Precision Medicine. Prevent.
Our strong belief is based on the Hippocratic principle "Καλλιον το προλαμβανειν του θεραπευειν" i.e. preventing a cancer is superior to treating it.
Precision
All our recommendations are based on individualising your risk for ovarian or endometrial cancer. This is based on expert research. A recently published review by M. Sideris et al. at MJA summarises all published evidence.
Prevention
Preventive options tend to be either invasive or medical (pharmacological) ir lifestyle. Based on your individualised risk we will discuss any available options.
Options
At the moment there is no screening options for Ovarian or Endometrial cancer. However, we will discuss any potnetial options until the individual is ready for a surgical or medical intervention. Surgical prevention for Ovarian or Endometrial hereditary cancer is the gold standard option for most cases.
